This is an original heliogravure by Pierre Puvis de Chavannes of the allegory of the Sorbonne, sometimes called the enchanted forest, (Le Bois sacré )

The image is formed of 4 separate plates fixed to a canvas ground. This image is not simply a photograph of the painting in the Sorbonne as there are some very minor differences. Neither is it an image of the oil on canvas held at the Met Museum dated 1889. It is in the original frame which appears to date from the 1920s and caries the frame makers label.
